Posted in Uncategorized by malaysiasms on July 4, 2009

IPOH, July 3 – The death of a suspected drug addict, Choong Soy Soy, 55, while under police custody here, was caused by a fall in the lock-up toilet, Ipoh police chief, ACP Azisman Alias said today.

He said Choong was pronounced dead at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (RPBH) at 11.05am on Tuesday following a neurosurgery operation on June 27.

“The post-mortem conducted by RPBH’s pathologist revealed that he died of head injuries as a result of the fall,” he said in a statement here today.

He said initial investigations also showed there was no foul play and the case was classified as sudden death.

Azisman said the family of the deceased was informed about the situation and that they had accepted the explanation.

Choong from Kampung Tawas here was arrested with another friend in a shophouse in the village for suspected drug abuse. He was remanded for 14 days from June 17 to July 1 to facilitate investigations under Section 3(1) of the Drug Dependents (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983. – Bernama

Police and FRU cordon off DAP dinner with 3,500 guests

Posted in Uncategorized by malaysiasms on June 22, 2009

(The Star) – DAP’s 43rd anniversary dinner started with 3,500 people eating in tents along Lorong Bayu Tinggi 4C here as truckloads of police and FRU, including two with water canons, cordoned off the area.

Police, at first, refused to allow dinner guests, including women and children, to enter the area but when DAP leaders Lim Kit Siang, Gobind Singh Deo and Ronnie Liu, among others, turned up at about 8pm, they marched in with them and took their seats.

However, police confiscated the PA system and told organisers that they were barred from making speeches, holding the lucky draw or having the lion dance.

Klang MP Charles Santiago said that police had originally given a permit on June 17 to hold the function in conjunction with Father’s Day in front of his service centre but revoked it at 3.30pm on June 19. He showed reporters the revoked permit.

The dinner went on peacefully and ended at about 10pm and most of the DAP leaders left.

Guests streamed out as police and FRU looked on.

The latest ‘death in police custody’ case : Eli Wong speaks

Posted in Uncategorized by malaysiasms on June 16, 2009

Below is the full text of the press statement issued by Yang Berkhidmat Elizabeth Wong today

Death in Custody in DUN Bukit Lanjan

It is with grave concern that yet another person has been found dead in police custody in Selangor, this time in my constituency of Bukit Lanjan.

Mr. A. Ghana Prakasom Anthony, a resident of Damansara Damai was found dead at the Sri Damansara Police Station at 8.06 am on Sunday, 14 June 2009. He leaves behind a wife and 6 children. He was arrested on Wednesday, 10 June 2009 .

The deceased’s wife was able to see him on Friday, 12 June 2009. During her visit, A. Ghana informed her that he had complained the magistrate who heard his remand that he was beaten in police custody. Further, his wife reported to me that her husband had a bruised right eye during her visit.

Ghana’s wife was then informed by the police that her husband was expected to be released on Monday without charges. Thus, it is shocking that a day before he is due for release, he was found dead in the lockup.

It is immaterial whether the suspect has a police record or not; a suspect is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. One expects the police to be fully responsible for the well-being and fair treatment of suspects while being in their custody.

I urge the Minister for Home Affairs to investigate this case thoroughly, without favour or fear, and for all police officers on duty during the days when A. Ghana had reported he was beaten in the lockup, leading to his demise, to be suspended pending the investigation.

I urge for a Royal Commission of Inquiry on Deaths in Police Custody to be formed, for the numbers of persons dying in police custody is a matter of national concern.

I join my fellow Members of Parliament and State Assemblymen in urging for the formation of the Independent Police Complaint and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) and a coroner’s court to arrest this problem. It is our collective wish that after this tragic incident, no other person would enter into a police lockup and come out in a body bag.

Posted in Uncategorized by malaysiasms on June 11, 2009

In 2007, six (6) police officers and two (2) underworld figures signed Statutory Declarations alleging that senior police officers right up to the IGP have links with the Chinese drugs, prostitution, illegal gambling and loan-shark syndicate based in Johor and which was expanding its operation throughout Malaysia. Another police officer made a police report alleging that his family was kidnapped by the ACA to force him to change his statement while the head of the CCD and his lawyer were arrested and charged for alleged criminal offenses for detaining underworld bosses under the Emergency Ordinance.

Saya, Mohd.

IPOH, May 26 — The police here “stopped” the planned Pakatan Rakyat (PR) hunger strike by arresting five workers and taking over the tent where the fast was to take place.

The light strike officers moved in at 7am arrested two locals and three Burmese workers from an event management company who were putting up the tent and a giant balloon — which was confiscated by the police.

They are now occupying the canopy to block PR from continuing with their fast which was meant to be part of a move to press for fresh state elections.

As at 9.30am, the riot police are still under the tent just outside the DAP headquarters here and having breakfast.

A total of 40 policemen, two jeeps, four police cars, two vans and seven trucks are in attendance but no PR leaders except for Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran have arrived.

Ousted mentri besar Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin and dumped speaker V. Sivakumar are due to launch the event at 11am.

The balloon has also been confiscated by the authorities.
