KL Hospital report: No signs that Saiful was sodomised

A key medical report issued by a government-run hospital found no evidence of penetration against Saiful Bukhari Azlan, the ex-staff who filed a sodomy charge against Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.
“The most vital evidence in a rape or sodomy charge is to show proof of penetration. And it is missing in this case,” Anwar’s lawyer Amer Hamzah Arshad told reporters.
The medical report from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital or HKL, where Saiful was sent for tests, clearly stated there was:
“No conclusive clinical findings suggestive of penetration to the anus and no significant defensive wound on the body of the patient.”
It was endorsed by three specialists and dated July 13, 2008. Copies were distributed to the press reporters by Anwar’s counsel on Thursday.
The HKL report also matches another prepared by Hospital Pusrawi or Pusat Rawatan Islam.
PKR vice president Sivarasa Rasiah, who is also one of Anwar’s lawyers, said the reports proved the charges were based on bad intention and part of a political conspiracy to defame the leader.
“Although there were expert statements that there was no penetration, the prosecution still proceeded with the case,” said Sivarasa.
The reform icon has pleaded not guilty to the sodomy charge brought against him by Prime Minister Najib Razak’s Umno-BN government.
The trial is due to be heard on July 1-24. But although a year has lapsed, Najib’s administration has delayed furnishing key documents to Anwar’s lawyers – making it difficult for them to prepare his defence.
Anwar has applied to the court to strike the charge, which he says was fabricated by his political foes to tarnish his credibility.
Last week, he also filed for a court order instructing the prosecution to furnish him with all relevant documents, including the basic police report Saiful had lodged, before hearing begins next month.
Like Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi, Anwar is a democracy icon and has been persecuted for challenging the corrupt Umno-BN regime now led by Najib.
And like the Burmese junta, Najib has been increasingly resorting to police crackdowns and sham trials to cling to power.
The U.S. State Department has gone on record to say that they believe the latest sodomy charge against Anwar was fabricated to derail his political career.
